What is the Best Method For Setting Trotlines?

Setting trotlines can be one of the most rewarding ways to catch catfish. Most states allow each fisherman to use 25 hooks, so as you can imagine, your odds are greatly increased to catch a lot of catfish. Setting trotlines looks like a simple hobby, but trust me, there is a lot more to it than meets the eye!

I have been setting trotlines for the fairest share of my life. We have had great catches and also nights where we just came out with a lesson learned. Fortunately for you, the lessons can be learned by just reading this article instead of wasting a lot of time. In this article, you will learn about the best way to make a trotline, the best methods placing a trotline, which bait to use on a trotline, and the best places to place a trotline.

The first thing you want to do is make a trotline. If you already know where you are setting the trotline, you can make it the proper length. If you don't know where though, I would just make a 25 hook line. If the hole is too small, you don't have to set all of the hooks. Be sure that you use braided line for the entire trotline. The braided line cost's a little more, but it is well worth it as the trotline ages. Also, be sure you get large stainless steel hooks. Be sure to get a proper size hook, depending on what size of fish are in the water. Without diagrams, it will be difficult to show you exactly how to make the line, but I suggest you do a Google search to see diagrams.

Next, you want to decide on what type of catfish you are wanting to catch. When I set trotlines, I am usually targeting flathead catfish and blue catfish. This doesn't mean you won't have the chance of catching a channel catfish, but the bait does increase your odds for flatheads and blues. I usually use small perch or goldfish. (Depending on how much time I have to get bait) Perch are obviously a lot cheaper, since you can usually catch a lot of them for free. Goldfish do cost some money, but they will save you at least a couple hours of time. Honestly, another good thing about perch is how durable they are. They can be hit a few times before they die, so that also really increases your odds of a catch.

When you are ready to set the trotline, there are some things you want to think about. Are you wanting to set your line across the top of the water or at the bottom? When going for catfish, I usually set my trotlines at the bottom. Catfish usually sit at the bottom, come up for food, and then go back down. If you set your lines on top, the fish will generally fight the whole they are hooked and will either get away or damage your trotline. If you hook them on the bottom, I've noticed they will just sit there more calmly. Also, we usually hammer broom sticks into the river bottom to hold the lines. By doing this, you can assure the lines are near the bottom also. Be very sure you get the lines hammered into the ground far enough. You don't want to lose your trotline!

Lastly, you need to know the best places in the water to set the trotlines. I usually like to set my lines when the river is very low because all of the fish will be congested in a few holes. I like to find the holes, and set the lines just on the upslope of the hole. Sometimes it is tough to get the broomsticks in due to sand, but at the bottom, there is a clay bottom most of the time, so you can pound the broom stick into the clay.

If you follow these instructions, I think you will have great success when setting trotlines. Keep in mind, luck also has a little bit to do with it though! If you pick the right night, you can catch a whole stringer full of fish! Good luck in your fishing adventures!

In this article, Ani Phyo shares on gourmet raw, what is in her pantry and the best blenders for home and travel. Ani Phyo is a raw food chef extraordinaire and the author of Ani's Raw Food Kitchen and Ani's Raw Food Desserts.

Kevin: I am excited to have Ani Phyo with us today. Today's going to be really fun. Why not introduce yourself and tell how you got into this whole arena.

Ani: Sure, okay. Let's see. I was really lucky to have been raised on a lot of raw food. My father was a raw fooder. That was like the previous generation of raw. It was when raw food was really about the functionality. So my mom would make vegetable juices with everything that was ripe in the garden that day, without any consideration for visual color or look or flavor. It was more about "put everything in there because it's good for you and hold your breath and chug it down and get it into your body because it was good for you."

Then around the mid-90s when I was in San Francisco during the whole dot-com boom, explosion, the multi-media gulch, I came upon Juliano's restaurant in San Francisco. For the first time I was introduced to a gourmet raw, this new wave of gourmet raw food, without really realizing that is was the same philosophy of what I had been raised with. As I started learning about that and discovering how it affected my body and gave me mental clarity and focus and kept me from getting sick and made my productivity very high, I started delving into it and making more of that food for myself. As I would have somebody over to dinner or go to dinner I'd be making more of it and sharing it. Everyone that would taste the food would be interested in it because everyone that I talked with wants to look and feel their best and get the most out of life and stay healthy and not be sick, all of that great stuff, be their ideal weight.

So I guess by the late 90s I had started doing more catering and events and dinners. When I went down to Los Angeles I was doing weekly dinners for 50-100 people, before there were any raw restaurants down here, really just as a service to the raw community because there were not restaurants. But also for selfish reasons because I needed to feed myself. It was like extreme gourmet. I would be soaking, dehydrating, marinating, sprouting. Really complex recipes. I don't enjoy doing that when making the food for myself. It's all about sharing it with others. So by having these events I could have a reason for making this food and then I'd have food to eat up to those events and then leftovers after the events. That would carry me through the week. So that's really how I got started, for selfish reasons, to have food to feed myself.

Kevin: The book is on consulting. You'd done consulting for different companies, correct? The original book you wrote. The first book you wrote.

Ani: "Return on Design"?

Kevin: Yes.

Ani: It was an interaction, user-experience design book.

Kevin: How did you go into raw food chef? What made you flip the switch? Was it just, "Hey I need to do something different, I don't like this anymore"?

Ani: I think what it was...I started off as a 3D modeler, animator and then a special effects person. That was the early 90s. As the web started happening in the early 90s and mid-90s, I sort of moved onto the web and doing multimedia online. Towards the later 90s it really became about the large corporations and eCommerce online. That was when I was doing the dinners on the weekends so I could have food to have to take with me into these corporate offices during the weekdays. I think it really just hit this plateau when I got down to LA and I was working with some of the studios and it was really heartbreaking for me to be in these environments because it was during the rolling blackouts and things and there was a shortage of energy, yet these huge corporate towers were really over-cooling the buildings to a point where employees were wearing like fall jackets to the office in the middle of summer when it was 110 degrees. They were wearing blankets over their shoulders at their desks. Our fingers were so cold I couldn't type. So they were wasting that much energy and then also they weren't recycling in the break room or whatever. They were drinking water out of Styrofoam cups. People would go and drink like three ounces of water out of a Styrofoam cup and then throw it away.

So being in that kind of environment was really challenging for me. By that time I had been several years of doing the catering and events. They were really taking off. I realized doing dinners 50-100 people every week, I was like, "Wow, this is really a viable business actually." So I thought, "Why don't I take a break from the convergence media and focus 100 percent on the food business?" That was really where my heart was. I could see how it was helping people. It was helping the community. It was helping people gain better health and getting more out of their lives and helping them feel better. So I just really believed in that. So that was when I made the switch from making large corporations more and more money when they weren't really taking care of their communities or the environment, over to the raw food.

Kevin: Great. Well, we have a lot of questions here. They're all over the map. We have a lot of great people who are listening and a lot of great questions. I'm kind of struggling as to where to start. Why don't we start with this listener's question? What are the top five things in your pantry?

Ani: That are in my pantry...

Kevin: Or that are in your arsenal?

Ani: The top five things. Well, right now I go to the Farmer's Market all the time, when I'm at home. I love it. Peaches are just so amazing. So I always have the vegetables and the fruit in my kitchen, always. I really like the dark leafy greens like the kales and the chards and I like cabbages because they're so alkalinizing. In my pantry I always have almonds and cashews and different kinds of nuts and seeds. Actually, in my fridge I have hemp and hemp protein. I always have my superfoods, like acai and my chia seeds and my maca and lucuma, all that kind of stuff, my goji berries. Then I have my greens like spirulina, E3live, Vitamineral Green, that kind of stuff, which I really love. So I think those things I would have on hand.

Then when I'm traveling I always have my personal blender with me and I just take the powders in one of the containers to make a smoothie. I'll have my hemp protein or something. That way when I get somewhere I can just pick up a banana and blend it in. I have my hemp protein and usually I put in some of the powdered E3Live stuff and different superfoods and I make mix. That way in my hotel room every morning I can start with a smoothie.

Kevin: Great. What kind of blender are you using? Are you traveling with?

Ani: A personal blender from TriBest. It's my favorite. I just love it because it's so tiny. I used to travel with my food processor or my Vitamix, so now I have more room in my suitcase for my clothes and my books and things like that. It's really tiny. I take my two-cup size container and it has the little blender top but it also has a storage top and it has a little travel top for it. It's really versatile. I really love that blender.

I particularly liked the Cuisinart ICE 50BC ice cream machine because it looks great on my counter. Shallow I know, but I prefer my kitchen comforts. It is brushed stainless steel, and it is one of my favorite kitchen appliances because I never have to store it away. It can also make dessert in less than an hour so I don't have to wait to serve my family one of their favorite desserts. You don't even have to pre-freeze, just add all of the ingredients and set the timer. It has an exact temperature control for great results, and built-in timer will stop the machine when dessert is ready to eat. The unit does all of the work. I end up saving a lot of money too when I think of the price of a half gallon today. It's almost $5, and at the rate my family eats ice cream, I can be building a small fortune

Some people are afraid to use stainless steel cookware, afraid that the lack of Teflon coating will make food cooked in them stick. I bought my first stainless steel pan set from HSN shopping network, and decided to try them out for myself. These pans are a dream, and clean up beautifully. My experience with these beautiful pans has been nothing but positive, and I've put them through their paces. The 20-piece aluminum pan set I bought is by Wolfgang Puck, a well-known chef, who definitely knows good pans when he sees them. Here are some of the highlights of this lovely set.

My set included a 1-quart saucepan, a 2-quart saucepan, an omelet pan, an 8-quart stock pot, a sautepan, and a large wok. All are heavy, and very well-constructed. Also included were glass lids for all pots and pans, as well as some lovely stainless cooking utensils such as spoons, turners, a fork, tongs, a skimmer and even an adjustable measuring spoon. The elegant mirror finish on all pieces makes all of them worth displaying. My kitchen looks much classier with these pans in use.

Most importantly, these pans cook evenly and quickly. I have gas burners, and use the pans on medium heat for best results. I followed the included instructions, which tell the user to first preheat the pan, then add the oil or butter to the hot pan. Then, add whatever you are cooking. It worked like a charm, and nothing has stuck. To clean the pans, while they are still hot, I pour water in them and then take a cloth, to wipe out any leftover mess, or run the hot pan under the faucet, to remove the food. It works wonderfully, and quickly.

Before buying this set, I was a slave to the cheap Teflon-coated pans. But, the coating didn't cook as evenly as I'd liked, and scratched. Plus, there are studies out nowadays about these kinds of coated pans allegedly being bad for health due to chemicals given off while cooking. I have one iron pan that is nice but a whole set of them is way too expensive for my middle-class budget. This set of cookware was reasonably priced and, watching them being used on HSN, I could tell that they were of high quality. In person, they are even more impressive, along with the cooking utensils, which are also heavy and well-made. I'm giving away my cheap, plastic spatulas, spoons and fork to someone else now that this set happily meets all my cooking needs. They show no wear at all with multiple uses, and the food cooked in them didn't burn or singe at all. I couldn't say that with the old coated pans.

If you want a quality set of cookware, Wolfgang Puck's line of stainless steel pots, pans and utensils won't steer you wrong. They are worth every penny paid, and more. A professional cook wouldn't put his name and reputation at stake by endorsing lousy pans. Try them and see how easy they are to use and clean. You won't be disappointed.

Here's the Cuisnart DCC-450BK with stainless steel carafe. We think it's great for 1-2 people who don't drink much coffee. We make 2 cups every morning for us and it tastes great. Here's the front and the on/off switch. If we open up the top you can see the filter and it comes out. The regular filter size doesn't fit but we just fold it in and it works fine. We got a big pack from costco months ago. The place where you put water is here and has the notches for how many cups you want to brew. Sometimes when you take the carafe out you might have these little dots of water on top. If you pour your coffee out right when it's done brewing then I never see these. Finally, an example pour!

Children need to consume the right foods and perhaps more importantly, get into the right habits, so as parents how can we persuade them?

Good nutrition is a complex issue, not least because there is so much variation between one person and another. Tests have shown that two apparently identical individuals living similar lifestyles can have very different amounts of vitamins and minerals in their blood. We all know that vitamins are essential, but did you know that minerals, in tiny quantities are also vital to the operation of our bodies, and that no matter how many drugs we consume, without minerals we cannot function properly?
